Filmmaker Martha Colburn once said that animation is like resurrection. Through animation, you are able to bring the dead back to life. In this program of films and animations by Kelly Gallagher, both political and personal histories are resurrected and brought to the forefront, clashing and intersecting with struggles of the present.
Kelly Gallagher is an experimental animator, filmmaker, and professor based in Ohio. She is primarily interested in handcrafted filmmaking and exploring the ways in which handmade animations make labor visible, aesthetically gesturing to the human relations of their production. Her theoretical work explores the radical political possibilities of experimental animation. She is invested in exploring the ways in which animation can be utilized to address stories of resistance. Her films have been translated and screened internationally in film festivals, galleries, and universities including: Ann Arbor Film Festival, Experiments in Cinema, Anthology Film Archives, ICA Artists’ Film Biennial, Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris, Alternative Film/Video Festival Belgrade, Berlin Mobile Kino, and the Lucca Film Festival.
